Vanessa Nadal Is A Scientist‑Turned‑Attorney!
Nadal attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and earned Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 2004.
After the graduation, she joined Johnson & Johnson and started working as a research & development scientist.
She initially wanted to become a neurosurgeon but later she realized that chemical engineering was the path that truly excited her.
Nadal worked on anti‑aging skincare products, conducting clinical studies to see if ingredients like retinol actually reduced wrinkles when working at Johnson & Johnson.
Recalling the time she spent at Johnson & Johnson with Frannie Sprouls for Hispanic Executive in 2025, Nadal said,
“But I felt a little lonely, so I moved to a group where I also tested clinical efficacy of cosmetics on actual users. For example, does this antiaging moisturizer actually reduce wrinkles?”
In the same interview, she revealed that she was considering whether to pursue a graduate degree or not because she wasn’t sure if she could stay in the lab after pursuing a PhD.
It was during her time in the lab that she started missing writing and critical thinking.
Nadal, being an avid reader, started looking and considered science journalism but a patent‑mapping exercise for a new idea sparked her interest in law.
But Nadal didn’t join law to leave science, she went to find another avenue into science. So, she Fordham Law School study abroad program in Madrid in 2009. Nadal studied EU and Spanish Law and also international comparative law in Spanish language.
Later, when Nadal was moving to London with her husband for his next project, she was reached out by the founder if the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham School of Law to be a part of a panel on beauty in the law for a cosmetic chemist.

Where Does Vanessa Nadal Work Now?
Vanessa now works at The Estée Lauder as its Global Marketing and Regulatory Counsel. There, she draws on her engineering background to assess and provide legal advice on complex performance and advertising claims for skincare, and makeup products around the world
She has been an adjunct professor at Fashion Law Institute at Fordham University School since 2019.
Together with fellow professor Claire Bing, she co‑created and co‑teaches the first law school course on U.S. Cosmetics Regulation, which is a groundbreaking class that covers everything from FDA rules to influencer marketing and international trade. It has been more than seven years since Nadal has been helping students understand how cosmetics are regulated, including the origins of U.S. cosmetic laws and discuss rules and requirements for advertising and marketing cosmetics.
Nadal’s impact extends well beyond the courtroom and classroom. She and her husband are deeply involved in philanthropic work, particularly in supporting STEM education and immigrant rights.

Vanessa and her husband Lin-Manuel Miranda met at the high school. They both attended Hunter College High School where Miranda had a crush on Nadal when he was in his senior year while Nadal was a sophomore.
But it was not when they began dating. Miranda does have revealed in his interviews that she was gorgeous and he was very bad in talking to women whom he found attractive. Although Miranda was pretty popular throughout his senior year, he could never manage to talk to Nadal who was incredibly focused in her studies.
Years later, Miranda came across Nadal’s profile on Facebook when catching up with his high school graduates. During that time, Nadal was working at Johnson & Johnson as a scientist while Miranda was member of Freestyle Love Supreme. He did have some creative success by writing lyrics on the subway and performing at bar mitzvahs but had no money.
Nadal had listed hip-hop and salsa as interests on her Facebook bio, so Miranda took the initiative and invited her to his next Freestyle Love Supreme show.
Surprisingly, Nadal showed up in the show and the rest is history.

Vanessa Nadal and Lin‑Manuel Miranda’s Married Life
Nadal and Miranda’s relationship doesn’t just involve Facebook and hip-hop improv. They also had a beautiful and fun filled wedding on September 5, 2010, at the Belvedere Mansion, in Staatsburg, N.Y.
Their reception included a 22‑piece orchestra and a surprise dance number that Miranda secretly rehearsed with her family for a month.
Nadal and Miranda are now married for more than 15 years and still appear deeply in love with one another.
They have also built a beautiful family together by welcoming two sons Sebastian Miranda and Francisco Miranda.
